Good morning, Lincoln. Here’s what you should know today.
Danek to retire
A longtime member of the Lincoln Board of Education will not seek reelection this spring after nearly a quarter-century serving on the board.
Kathy Danek, who has represented northeast Lincoln's District 1 on the school board since 2001, announced on social media she would retire from that role at the end of her term in May.
Danek most recently won election in 2021 when she secured a sixth four-year term to the board overseeing Lincoln Public Schools.
Turning tree into art
Animals and wildlife have been a part of Linda Schulte’s life since she was a child.
So when a large chunk of the ash tree in the front yard of her home in east Lincoln had to be cut down, Schulte decided to have the tree carved into a piece of art devoted to wildlife.

Ex-Husker makes Pro Bowl
Beatrice High School graduate Cam Jurgens, who moved from tight end to center at the urging of a former Husker coach, made his first NFL Pro Bowl on Thursday.
Jurgens, who is in his third season for the Philadelphia Eagles, was one of two NFC centers selected to the Pro Bowl roster. Jurgens played guard during the 2022 and 2023 seasons for the Eagles as Jason Kelce finished his storied career. Jurgens took over at center this season following Kelce’s retirement.
A do-it-all athlete at Beatrice — where he played three sports and won seven combined state titles in shot put and discus — Jurgens arrived at Nebraska as a four-star tight end recruit. During his first year on campus in 2018, he played some tight end but moved to center after then-coach Scott Frost suggested Jurgens would have more potential there.
