Good morning, Lincoln. Here’s what you should know today.
High court hears Trail appeal
The Nebraska Supreme Court quietly took up one of the most notorious criminal cases in the state in recent years hearing arguments over whether Aubrey Trail's motion for postconviction relief should be allowed to go forward despite it being filed two months too late.
Unlike earlier court hearings, there was no talk about the gruesomeness of his crime, the killing and dismemberment of 24-year-old Sydney Loofe of Lincoln. And Trail, who became known for unexpected displays in court appearances, wasn't even in the room.
Rather, Wednesday's oral arguments homed in on whether the motion challenging his conviction and death sentence was time-barred by statute because it had been filed more than a year after the mandate in his case.
Moose’s Tooth closing
Although Lincoln clothing store Moose's Tooth is closing its doors after more than 40 years of business, it will be remembered far longer by both the Sonderup family and the community.
The future of the Moose’s Tooth building is still an open question. Owner Julie said that Cycle Works, which she and her husband, Kris also own, could expand into some of the space, but another business could move in.
The store is hosting a closing sale throughout May, starting Thursday with all items being at least 20% off. Throughout the month, the store will adjust the discount to ensure all the items are sold.
Husker women’s schedule
The format for the Big Ten women’s basketball conference schedule will remain the same next season, which means Nebraska and Iowa will play twice.
The schedule is a flip from last season, meaning home game opponents from last season will be a road trip for the Huskers.
A highlight of the schedule for Nebraska fans will be UCLA and USC playing in Lincoln this season. USC made the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight last season and UCLA was in the national semifinals.
That’s it for Thursday, May 1. Stay in the know with Lincoln’s longest-standing news source at JournalStar.com and we will see you back here tomorrow.
