Legislation targets social media
Gov. Jim Pillen and a group of Republican lawmakers unveiled a set of proposed policies Monday that seek to shield Nebraska's children from the harmful effects that social media can have on adolescents.
At Pillen's request, lawmakers will put forward four bills this year meant to curb youths' access to social media and the potential harms they could be subject to online, including one proposal that would bar Nebraskans younger than 18 from joining social media apps without parental consent.
The other proposals backed by the governor include bills that would require Nebraska schools to bar students from using cellphones, require social media companies to build protections for children into their platforms and outlaw the creation or possession of computer-generated "deep fake" child sex abuse images.

TikTok case can proceed
A Lancaster County judge is allowing the Nebraska Attorney General's civil case against social media giant TikTok to go forward alleging the company has made misrepresentations under state consumer protection laws.
In the lawsuit filed in May, Attorney General Mike Hilgers' office accused TikTok of falsely marketing and promoting its "addictive and otherwise harmful product" to Nebraskans.
On Monday Hilgers said he was grateful to the court for allowing the case to proceed "so that our office can continue to fight for Nebraskans and protect them from exploitative companies that would do them harm."
Weidner likely out for season
A 69-62 win for the Nebraska women’s basketball team on Sunday at Rutgers kept the weekend from being a double whammy for the Huskers.
One day earlier, there was a crushing scene in Lincoln when Nebraska junior guard Allison Weidner sustained a knee injury during a morning practice. It’s likely to be season-ending, according to the Huskers Radio Network. Weidner did not travel to New Jersey for the game.
All injuries impact the team because the players and coaches know how hard their teammates have worked, but this one is especially devastating because it would be the third straight season Weidner had her season end early due to a knee injury
