State plans to demolish part of prison
Nebraska prison officials remain mum about what they plan to do with the aging State Penitentiary following the construction of a $350 million replacement facility north of Lincoln. But according to internal emails and other public records obtained by the Journal Star the state plans to demolish at least one housing unit on the 155-year-old prison's campus.
Nebraska's Department of Correctional Services plans to raze the State Penitentiary's Housing Unit 1, which hasn't been in use for more than two years after a pipe burst in November 2022 and flooded the unit’s mechanical room.

Prison officials predicted at the time that the damage would force the unit — which housed 134 inmates prior to the flood — out of commission for at least two years. But by early this year the department determined the building was damaged beyond repairing it at a reasonable cost.
Goodhue trees to stay
For the time being, the trees along Goodhue Boulevard will remain.
The city on Tuesday withdrew its controversial application to the Nebraska Capitol Environs Commission to remove 24 trees along Goodhue Boulevard that line the south corridor leading to the state Capitol.
Parks and Recreation officials say they anticipate continued community engagement as they develop a new plan for Goodhue Boulevard that prioritizes public safety and the health of the urban canopy.
Raiola all in
With transfer visits and discussions ongoing during the week, some players have taken to social media to confirm their intentions.
Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola appeared to make things clear after posting “All in! G-B-R” on his Instagram, but that didn’t stop head coach Matt Rhule from having to confirm the freshman’s status with the team.
Rhule, who appeared alongside Boston College head coach Bill O’Brien in a virtual press conference for the Pinstripe Bowl Tuesday morning, confirmed that he expects Raiola to play in the bowl game.
