Officials tout quarter-cent sales tax
Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and other stakeholders took to the microphone Thursday to advocate for renewing the quarter-cent sales tax that has, for the past five years, added nearly $80 million for street improvements and new construction.
City officials released the latest annual report on the so-called Lincoln On the Move projects — which shows the city spent $19.3 million of the sales tax revenue on 27 lane miles of street improvements this year.
But most of the news conference was spent touting the overall benefits of the program — part of what Gaylor Baird said is part of a “vital” community conversation before any official announcement about what happens next with the sales tax, which is set to expire in September.

No white Christmas?
Lincolnites got a white Christmas last year, with nearly 3 inches of snow falling on Dec. 25. But don’t expect a similar Christmas miracle this year.
The National Weather Service is forecasting sun and temperatures in the upper 40s for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
The weather should be ideal, though, for the tens of millions of people who plan to hit the road and travel at least 50 miles for the holiday.
Holgorsen evaluating roster
A whirlwind of a month has stretched into two for Nebraska’s Dana Holgorsen.
Elevated to Nebraska’s offensive coordinator less than six weeks ago, Holgorsen is still learning the Husker roster as he prepares to lead the NU offense into a Dec. 28 bowl game — and he’s helping flip the roster, too.
Said Holgorsen, “It’s been really fun to figure out who the players are that I didn’t really know who they were because they were on scout team; somebody leaves and it’s an opportunity for other guys to step in. I think that’s how you’ve got to look at it — you don’t worry about the ones that aren’t playing, you worry about the ones that are playing.”
