What went wrong: Despite Lincoln holding Des Moines to just two shots in the third period, the Buccaneers capitalized on one of them as TJ Walsh gave them a 3-1 lead in Des Moines, Iowa. The Stars' special teams suffered, going 0-for-4. Matt Brown scored 12:58 into the first period, and Kaden Bohlsen added a goal 12:50 into the second frame that helped Des Moines to a 2-0 lead. The Stars outshot the Bucs 30-18, holding Des Moines to just eight shots over the final 40 minutes, but were unable to capitalize on opportunities. Tyler Johnson, making his second consecutive start since joining the Stars, suffered the loss, stopping 15 of Des Moines shot attempts.
What went right: With Lincoln railing 2-0, Samuli Niinisaari quickly cut into the Bucs' lead with his first USHL goal 3:49 into the final period. Philippe Lapointe, who had a goal and an assist, scored with just over a minute remaining to make the score 3-2.
Up next: The Stars will play a Tuesday matchup in Kearney against the Tri-City Storm at 7 p.m. before returning to Lincoln on Friday to begin a five-game homestand.
