Three birdies over the first five holes helped Megan Whittaker build an early lead, as she turned back Lincoln's Kate Strickland for the Nebraska Girls' Match Play Championship title with a 3 and 2 win on Wednesday at York Country Club.
Whittaker, an Elkhorn South graduate, built a five-hole lead through the front nine. After Stickland got wins on Nos. 12 and 15, matching pars on No. 16 gave Whittaker her second match play title in the last three years. Whittaker also won the Class A state last fall.
In Nebraska Junior Match Play Championship action, also Wednesday at York CC, Omaha's Ryan Rogers had a hole-in-one on the 165-yard par-3 16th to close out his 4 and 2 semifinal win over York's Dalton Mogul.
Papillion-La Vista's Alex Zillig won his semifinal, 4 and 3, over Graham Southwick of Beatrice. Rogers and Zillig meet at 8 a.m. Thursday in the final.
