Creighton recorded its 22nd straight win with a 21-25, 25-20, 25-17, 16-25, 20-18 upset of fourth-ranked Kansas on Friday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Lawrence, Kansas.
Jaali Winters led the No. 21 Bluejays with 23 kills, while Lincoln Southwest graduate Marysa Wilkinson added 15 and Pius X graduate Lauren Smith had seven.
Creighton (28-6) hit .250 in the match.
The Jayhawks, who won the Big 12 title, ended the season 27-3. It was the first home loss of the season and the Jayhawks' first setback in its nine five-set matches.
Creighton had six set-point opportunities and evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 victory in the second set.
The Bluejays built off that momentum and controlled the third set while never trailing on their way to a 25-17 victory. Creighton grabbed its largest lead at nine, 22-13, following a service ace by Lydia Dimke, the Bluejays seventh of the match. Winters put the set away with her seventh kill of the set.
Kansas bounced back, never trailing and holding Creighton to .111 hitting in forcing a fifth set.
In the clinching set, Creighton took a 2-0 lead, but Kansas tied it at 2-2. Neither team led by more than one point until the Bluejays took a 14-12 lead on a Jayhawk error. Kansas pulled even at 14-14 and the teams traded points until Wilkinson and Megan Ballenger had back-to-back kills to give Creighton the upset.
The fifth set featured 16 ties and six lead changes.
Wilkinson and Winters had five kills apiece in the fifth set.
Kelsie Payne had 26 kills to lead Kansas.
The Bluejays will play Michigan in the regional semifinals next Friday. The Wolverines defeated Oregon 22-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-17.
