The Creighton volleyball team can say it is perfect at home in NCAA Tournament action.
The No. 15 Bluejays won their home tournament debut with a four-set 25-20, 27-25, 20-25, 25-22 win over Coastal Carolina on Friday before a sold-out crowd of 2,517 at D.J. Sokol Arena.
Creighton pulled away in the first set, using a 5-0 run to build a late 17-13 lead before Samantha Bohnet's ace gave the Bluejays (26-6) the set win.
Creighton saved four set points in the second set after trailing 24-21 for a wild 27-25 win. In the fourth and deciding set, the Bluejays broke a 20-20 tie with a 3-0 run that started on a kill from Lincoln Southwest graduate Marysa Wilkinson.
“The losses that we had the last couple of weeks helped us grow as a team and for this weekend and without those losses I’m not sure how this game would have gone," Wilkinson said. "Because we have learned that we got to play better every single weekend because the teams are going to get better as we go.”
Wilkinson had 13 kills and a match-high six blocks, Jaali Winters had a sixth straight double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs and Brittany Witt added 15 digs to surpass 1,000 for her career.
Lincoln Pius X graduate Sara Boothe had 20 set assists for the Chanticleers.
Creighton faces No. 12 Michigan State (22-8) at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Spartans swept Missouri State 25-19, 25-11, 25-15 in Friday's opening match.
