The No. 11 Wayne State volleyball team upset No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul 25-16, 26-24, 25-10 in the Central Regional final on Saturday in St. Paul, Minnesota, to advance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight.
The Wildcats hit .410 and had just six attack errors to reach the national quarterfinals for the first time in program history.
Concordia-St. Paul, the top seed in the regional, was aiming for its eighth national title. It was just the Golden Bears' third loss in 28 postseason matches on their floor.
Senior Elizabeth Gebhardt led the way with 14 kills on 22 attempts, and Katie Hughes had 13 kills and 13 digs. Michaela Mestl added 10 kills and 12 digs, while senior setter Leisa McClintock had 40 set assists.
Hughes had back-to-back kills to end a close second set.
The Elite Eight is Thursday through Saturday in Tampa, Florida.
* COLUMBIA WINS NAIA TITLE: Penny Liu had 12 kills in leading Columbia (Missouri) to a 28-26, 25-16, 25-21 win against Missouri Baptist in the NAIA volleyball championship in Sioux City, Iowa. Midland's Priscilla O'Dowd was named to the all-tournament team after racking up 58 kills and 31 blocks in five matches.
