William Carey (Mississippi) outlasted Hastings in a shootout to eliminate the defending champion Broncos 2-1 in the second round of the NAIA men's soccer tournament Tuesday in Delray Beach, Florida.
The Broncos misfired on their final two attempts in the shootout and No. 2 William Carey advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 4-3 edge in penalty kicks.
James Cooper's shootout goal proved to be the difference.
Hastings took a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute when Nick Hinds caught William Carey not set and connected from the top of the box.
William Carey, which outshot Hastings 11-3 in the second half, tied the match on Chance Bourdene's goal in the 50th minute.
Hastings, which won the 2016 NAIA national title, finishes its season at 18-1-1.
