North Carolina vs. Nebraska, 9.11.15

North Carolina defender Paige Nielsen (left) keeps the ball away from Nebraska midfielder Haley Hanson during the first half Sept. 11, 2015, at Hibner Stadium.

North Carolina defender and Lincoln Southeast graduate Paige Nielsen was selected by the Seattle Reign FC with the No. 25 overall pick in the National Women’s Soccer League Draft on Friday.

Nielsen tweeted her reaction to the news by saying “@SeattleReignFC very honored and very grateful. Excited to join you! @NWSL"

At Southeast, she had 79 goals and 35 assists. Both remain school records.

Nielsen moved from midfielder to defender this season and was named one of North Carolina’s team captains. She played in every game her senior and junior seasons, and came on as a substitute in the 2012 national championship match against Penn State as a freshman.

She is the first Nebraska native to be chosen in the NWSL Draft.
