Tony Barone calls to his team while coaching the Memphis Grizzlies in 2006.

Tony Barone, who coached Creighton men's basketball from 1985-91, died Tuesday after a long battle with lung cancer, the school announced. He was 72.

Barone, who was inducted into the Creighton Hall of Fame, led the Bluejays to an NCAA Tournament upset of New Mexico State in 1991 and finished with a 102-82 record at the school before heading to Texas A&M. He later worked for the Memphis Grizzlies, serving as an assistant, interim head coach and director of player personnel.

Barone's best season at A&M came in 1993-94 when he led the Aggies to a 19-11 season and an NIT berth.

Barone's 1990-91 Creighton team set a then-school record for wins with 24, and swept the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament championships. The Bluejays also won both league titles in 1989 under Barone.
