Top-ranked Concordia roared past Wilberforce 100-62 in the first round of the NAIA Division II women's basketball tournament on Wednesday in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Bulldogs went on a 22-0 run in the first quarter, a spurt keyed by pressure defense. The top-seeded team forced 27 turnovers in the first half alone and 34 for the game.
“I thought our kids played really, really well,” Concordia coach Drew Olson said. “In that first half, we were focused and played with good energy defensively. I didn’t think we shot well early in the game, but we were finishing layups. As the game went, on we started hitting our threes.”
Concordia hit just 3-of-16 three-pointers in the first half, but heated up after that. The Bulldogs hit 6-of-12 in the second half. Taryn Schuette hit three for Concordia.
Philly Lammers led Concordia with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, and Grace Barry added 14 points while 14 different players scored in the game.
Mustafa Notter led Wilberforce (14-13) with 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Bulldogs (31-3) will play Cardinal Stritch (Wisconsin) on Friday at noon.
Hastings will play Aquinas (Michigan) in a first-round game at 5:15 p.m. Thursday.
