A year removed from a ninth-place finish at the NCAA championships, the Huskers return a healthy amount of wrestlers. Huskers Tyler Berger, Chad Red and Taylor Venz return after being All-Americans last season.
The 133-pound position still remains open for NU, with Tucker Sjomeling, Brian Peska, Christian Miller and Jevon Parris facing off in a four-man bracket on Thursday night for the starting spot.
“We feel all four of them are guys that can step on the mat for us,” Nebraska coach Mark Manning said.
Among other matches, Jordan Shearer and Collin Purinton will wrestler for the 149-pound spot, while Patrick Grayson and Christian Lance will grapple for the heavyweight position.
Nebraska opens up its season at the Daktronics Open in Brookings, South Dakota on Saturday. Manning said Red, Berger and Venz will not make the trip to Brookings, and instead will stay back with Manning to train over the weekend.
