Stanford vs. Nebraska, 12.15

Nebraska's Mikaela Foecke points to Jazz Sweet after she made a kill against Stanford on Dec. 15 during the second set of the national championship at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

Just five months after her Nebraska volleyball career ended, Mikaela Foecke has earned a roster spot with the United States women’s national team for a big-prize-money tournament.

On Friday Team USA announced its roster for Week 1 of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League, and Foecke made the cut when the 25-player roster was trimmed to 14 for the first matches. The Americans’ first match is against Belgium on Tuesday in Ruse, Bulgaria.

Foecke is the only former Husker on the Week 1 roster, but Kelsey Robinson and Jordan Larson will likely be added later in the six-week tournament. Tournament matches will be played in Lincoln on June 4-6.

With many of the veteran players just finishing their professional seasons, Team USA is going with a young lineup to start the tournament.

Jordyn Poulter, who just finished her college career at Illinois, has made the roster, as has Wisconsin middle blocker Dana Rettke, who will be a junior this season. Foecke is one of eight players making their debuts in FIVB senior-level competition.
