Volleyball Nations League 2019

Former Nebraska volleyball player Mikaela Foecke (bottom left) and the U.S. women’s national team started the FIVB Volleyball Nations League tournament on Tuesday in Ruse, Bulgaria.

Mikaela Foecke has not played her final match in Lincoln after all.

The former Husker was named to the U.S. Women's National Team roster for the FIVB Volleyball Nations League event in Lincoln, which will begin Tuesday and run through Thursday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Ex-Huskers Jordan Larson and Kelsey Robinson were named to the team, too, meaning three of the four outside hitters on the 14-player roster are from Nebraska.

For Foecke, her time with the national team in this tournament will continue. She played for Team USA during the first week of matches in Bulgaria. Larson and Robinson will be making their debuts when the tournament moves to Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The roster will include setters Carli Lloyd and Jordyn Poulter; liberos Megan Courtney and Mary Lake; middle blockers Tori Dixon, Lauren Gibbemeyer, Chiaka Ogbogu and Dana Rettke; outsides Madi Kingdon Rishel, Foecke, Larson and Robinson; and opposite hitters Annie Drews and Jordan Thompson.

The USA roster will have a blend of experience and youth. Foecke and Poulter (Illinois) were each playing in the Final Four just six months ago. Larson, Robinson and Lloyd have played in the Olympics.

The Volleyball Nations League includes 15 pool-play matches for each country spread over five consecutive weeks. The top five teams from the preliminary round will compete in the VNL Final six, along with host China from July 3-4. The winning team will receive $1 million.

The Americans are 5-1 entering the Lincoln stage.
