Former Nebraska volleyball player Mikaela Foecke (bottom left) and the U.S. women’s national team started the FIVB Volleyball Nations League tournament on Tuesday in Ruse, Bulgaria.

The United States women’s national team rallied by winning the final two sets Wednesday to beat host Italy in a battle of the final two undefeated teams in the FIVB Volleyball Nations League.

The Americans won the match in five sets, 25-22, 17-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-11.

The U.S., now 5-0 with 14 points in the league, plays again Thursday against NORCECA zonal rival Dominican Republic (2-3). Italy, the runner-up in the 2018 FIVB World Championship, is 4-1 with 12 points in this year’s VNL. The Americans have beaten the first- and second-place teams from the 2018 FIVB World Championships in the first two VNL days in Conegliano, Italy.

Outside hitter and Arizona graduate Madi Kingdon Rishel led the U.S. with 19 points on 18 kills and one block. Outside hitter Simone Lee, a Penn State graduate seeing her first action in the VNL, had 13 points, with 11 kills and two blocks after a slow start.

None of the three former Huskers on the U.S. roster for the tournament are on the 13-player active roster for this week.
