Maddie Unzicker had a career-best three-hit day and Olivia Ferrell pitched four innings of relief to help the Huskers defeat Idaho State 10-4 in nine innings at the Colorado State Classic in Fort Collins, Colorado, Thursday.
In the ninth the Huskers exploded for six runs on four hits. Bree Boruff scored the eventual game-winning run after Rylie Unzicker singled with a perfect bunt down the left side. Samantha Owen added a two-RBI triple to push the lead to 7-4 before Nebraska scraped three more across the plate.
Nebraska made the game difficult for themselves after holding an early 3-0 lead through the top of the sixth inning. The Bengals rallied for three unearned runs combined in the sixth and seventh to force extra innings.
The Huskers and Bengals each scratched a runner across the plate in the eighth.
Tristen Edwards continued her power surge with a solo blast to left field that gave Nebraska a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Regan Mergele went five innings, giving up four hits, one walk and recorded three strikeouts before Ferrell came in for relief.
Colorado State held a 10-6 lead after three innings in the Huskers second game before the game was stopped due to darkness. Ram Field currently does not have lights.
The two teams will resume the game Friday at 4:45 p.m. in the fourth inning. If time allows, Nebraska and Colorado State will play their scheduled Friday contest following the first game.
