Patrick O'Brien

San Juan Hills quarterback Patrick O'Brien prepares to throw the ball during a 2014 practice.

High school

My school: San Juan Hills High School (San Juan Capistrano, California).

Position: Quarterback.

This week: San Juan Hills takes a 2-0 record into Friday’s game against Capistrano Valley. This season, O’Brien has competed 59 of 72 passes for 601 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions.

Rankings: A four-star prospect according to Rivals.com, O’Brien is the No. 7 ranked pro-style QB in the country. He was ranked No. 36 overall in California in the preseason.

The college life

Projected position at NU: Quarterback.

First contact with the Huskers: “Ryan Gunderson, the player personnel guy, messaged me. (Offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf) flew out to watch me throw, and then I knew they were pretty interested in me. Then I started to really check them out and see what they were all about.”

Date committed: May 21.

The moment I knew I wanted to be a Husker … : “Probably on the second day of my unofficial visit when I started eating dinner. My whole family and I fell in love with the school. I felt really comfortable around the coaching staff, and their styles.”

When people say Coach Mike Riley is nice … : “It’s true. He’s actually a real genuine kind of guy. I mean, I can’t really see him yelling, but he probably does a little bit. He’s really laid-back and he’s a really cool guy. He’s relaxed. People saying he’s nice is very spot on.”

My Hudl highlights (26,600 views): “I just kind of star certain plays from the film during the games, and then put those all together in a Hudl highlight. I trim the plays a little bit and put it next to music. I always like having music next to mine. I feel like I put my more deep throws first, and then some running. And then a mix of different plays.”

Quick hits

When I get to call one play: “It depends on the coverage. I like to throw the deep ball, but I’ll call whatever play is going to put my team in the best position to win.”

Lunch with three other quarterbacks: “Tom Brady for sure. Probably Andrew Luck, also. And then probably Dan Marino. I wear No. 12 because of Tom Brady, and I would like to meet him to see how he is. And people say I kind of play like Andrew Luck in a way, and I like him a lot. He’s one of my top quarterbacks, between him and Brady. And Dan Marino, I don’t know, he’s old-school, but he’s a gunslinger. I just like the style he played with.”

On enrolling at Nebraska in January: “After I committed, I kind of wanted to come early. I took classes over the summer. I have every credit already completed, and at the end of this semester I’ll be graduated from high school and ready to early enroll. I’ll enroll at Nebraska and be ready for spring ball.”
