Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah rushes the ball in the first half of a preseason NFL football game against the Baltimore Ravens earlier this August.

One of the best running backs in Nebraska football history is looking for work.

The Detroit Lions on Tuesday waived Ameer Abdullah, leaving the Husker great without a job for the first time in his professional career.

Abdullah, 25, was picked by the Lions in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft and had been with the franchise ever since. However, this season he served in primarily a reserve role and bounced back and forth between the active roster and the gameday inactive list.

He was waived to make room for former South Carolina receiver Bruce Ellington and former South Dakota State running back Zach Zenner, who the Lions signed Tuesday.

Abdullah earned All-Big Ten honors twice, and in 2014 was a Doak Walker finalist and a second-team All-American. He remains second in school history in career rushing yards (4,588) and fifth in rushing touchdowns (39).

Abdullah was in the final year of his rookie contract.
