Former staffer says morale not what it once was

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman announces decision to terminate Steve Pederson as Athletic Director at a press conference in Lincoln. (Gwyneth Roberts)

I once drank five Red Bulls in one day. It was five years ago.

I remember this well because it was the day Steve Pederson was fired as Nebraska's athletic director. That meant a long day at the office for me and the machine in the break room had Red Bulls, so I just kept going back to the well to help me get through the day.

Sipple, much the same. It explains much, I know.

Probably a good reason they stopped putting Red Bull in that machine.

Anyhow, if you forgot what it was like around here five years ago, here's a reminder.

Dan Cook delivered one of my all-time favorite quotes in that story. Tom Osborne played it cool. A day later, there was another press conference saying he was interim AD.

We ran a giant photo of Pederson on the front page of our paper above the linked story with a monster headline that read "SACKED." My personal opinion was we had gone overkill with the headline -- and still do think that. I actually cringed a little when I picked up my paper that next morning. But I received just one phone call about the way we played it.

At that point, there was no headline font too grand. People were that kind of fed up.
