Ameer Abdullah Football Camp

Former Husker cornerback and NFL free agent Alfonzo Dennard shows off the Super Bowl ring he won with the New England Patriots during the Ameer Abdullah football camp Saturday at Lincoln Pius X.

So what is Alfonzo Dennard up to these days?

Well, outside of taking some time out of his Saturday to help coach at Ameer Abdullah's youth camp at Lincoln Pius X High School, he's grinding nonstop.

And waiting.

"Whatever I have to do to get on the field," Dennard said.

Some of his waiting game is related to a probation violation last December, but Dennard, 26, is staying in shape, working out at Gold's Gym in Lincoln and on the UNL campus.

He's crossed paths with some of the current players on the occasions he's on campus, but since he's "been out of school for a minute" he doesn't know the current roster well and pretty much exchanges pleasantries as the extent of his interaction. Dennard has yet to meet the the new coaching staff.

In terms of his professional prospects, Dennard said he has had some contact with the Chicago Bears but nothing significant at this point. So he's just putting in the work, "trying to get my foot back in the door."

"I know it will probably take a process, but I'm going to be ready for whatever," Dennard said. "Whenever somebody calls, I'll guarantee you I'll be ready."

He did have a solid message to campers at the end of the day Saturday, stressing the importance of school and getting a degree.
