Cycle continues: Who's next?

Cycle continues: Who's next?

Talked to a Husker staff member Sunday morning who had just learned of the news.

"Whadya gonna do? It's probably best for everybody in the long run," he said.

I don't necessarily agree. But I understand the sentiment.

Sometimes someone with a fresh message does make sense. But from whom will the message come?

This is going to thrust Shawn Eichorst in the spotlight as an A.D., a place he's managed to avoid.

To whom will he turn?

A few obvious ideas:

-- Jim McElwain, head coach at Colorado State: He's coached in the Big Ten and SEC. CSU is 10-2 this season, including 6-2 in the Mountain West.

-- Jim Tressel, former Ohio State head coach. How about Tressel, age 61, as head coach with Scott Frost as offensive coordinator? It would be a dream team in the eyes of many. Tressel's issues at Ohio State may be a deal-breaker. His show-cause penalty expires in December 2016.

-- Frost, Oregon offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Turns 40 in January. Marcus Mariota is set to bolt to NFL. This might be a good time for Frost, formerly of Wood River, to start a head-coaching career. But is he ready for NU's inherent demands? His background as a Husker great would give him leeway with fans, one would think.

-- Paul Chryst, Pittsburgh head coach. Called plays for Wisconsin from 2005-11 while Eichorst worked in the athletic department. Pitt, though, is 6-6 this season (4-4 ACC). That alone migth make him a tough sell.

-- Gary Patterson, TCU head coach. Hard-nosed defensive guy. Wait, we just had one of those. And I'm not sure why Patterson would leave TCU for Nebraska at this point in his career.

Feel free to shoot us your ideas.

Never really thought I'd see Nebraska enter into a hire-fire cycle. Solich, Callahan, Pelini and now ...

This is going to be interesting.
