Former Husker bowler Julia Bond is in fourth place at the U.S. Women's Open in Las Vegas after Friday's first round of match-play competition.
Bond, who was an All-American at Nebraska, went 4-1-0 with a 7,762 pinfall, trailing co-leaders Shannon Sellens and Liz Johnson, each with 7,800 pinfalls, and Tannya Roumimper with 7,764. The top five competitors in total pinfall, including bonus pins, after two more rounds of match play Saturday will advance to Sunday's stepladder finals.
Of the other former Huskers still in the event, Erin McCarthy was 11th (7,593), Liz Kuhlkin was 12th (7,589), Meghan Straub was 16th (7,535),
A total of 11 former Huskers were competing at the event. Lindsay (Baker) Boomershine and Diandra (Hyman) Asbaty made it through qualifying but lost in Friday's cashers' round. Cassandra Leuthold, Shannon Pluhowsky, Gazmine (GG) Mason, Elise Bolton and Valerie (Calberry) Bercier failed to reach the qualifying round.
