As Nebraska’s 2019 recruiting class has grown steadily over the past several weeks, multiple positions of need were addressed.
Matthew Anderson (Leesville, Louisiana) and Michael Lynn (Englewood, Colorado) add to a young-but-rather thin group of offensive tackles. Tony Fair (Pima Community College) is a big defensive tackle who could factor in the equation quickly. Nick Henrich (Omaha Burke) is not only local, but the Huskers need young talent at inside linebacker.
But Nebraska hadn’t yet found its first verbal pledge in the secondary for the current recruiting cycle.
Now it has.
Quinton Newsome, a defensive back from Suwanee, Georgia, committed to Nebraska on Monday after visiting campus recently with his parents.
Newsome is listed at 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds and is rated a three-star prospect by both 247Sports and Rivals.
The Huskers first offered Newsome in late March and likely felt good about where they stood in recent days and weeks. The North Gwinnett High standout recently announced NU, Auburn and Georgia as his three finalists and said a commitment would follow shortly. At the same time, he set up a visit to see Lincoln with his parents. They arrived here over the last weekend of July and stayed two days.
That was the final step before making his commitment public.
Newsome did not return calls from the Journal Star on Monday.
As a junior, Newsome compiled 49 tackles and an interception for North Gwinnett in 2017 and helped lead the school to its first state championship. The Bulldogs lost their first game of the season, then won 14 straight, capping their season with a win at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in December.
The Huskers, meanwhile, continue to mine the state of Georgia for talent.
Newsome is the second verbal commitment of the 2019 cycle from the Peach State — he joins Grayson High running back Ronald Thompkins — and the fifth overall since Frost was hired in early December.
Newsome is Nebraska’s 16th verbal commitment for 2019 overall and the seventh for the cycle since June 22. The Huskers also landed their first 2020 pledge late last month with the addition of quarterback Logan Smothers.
