Barrett Ruud

Barrett Ruud makes a stop against Texas Tech while playing for the Huskers.  Ruud, a former NFL player, is following head coach Scott Frost from Central Florida to Nebraska as inside linebackers coach.

A familiar face will be coaching Nebraska linebackers under new head coach Scott Frost.

A source told the Journal Star on Sunday that former Husker linebacker and Lincoln native Barrett Ruud will coach the position he manned for four years here more than a decade ago.

Ruud served as a quality-control administrator on Frost's staff at Central Florida.

The Lincoln Southeast graduate finished his Husker career as the school's leading tackler, with 432 stops. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the second round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

Frost was in no hurry to announce his Nebraska staff Sunday — he didn't confirm any hires — but did hint at what things may look like in the coming weeks.

"A lot of coaches, when they get a bigger job or change from one school or another, think they need to go out and hire some different people," Frost said Sunday. "The guys that helped us win there (at UCF) can help us win here, and I expect a majority of them to join me."

The Journal Star has reported NU coaching positions for former Huskers Ryan Held (running backs) and Greg Austin (offensive line), as well as Mario Verduzco (quarterbacks) and Mike Dawson (defensive line).

UCF defensive coordinator Erik Chinander is also expected to make the move, and other Knights defensive assistants may as well.

"I’m going to take a little time to name those guys," Frost said. "But I will tell you that the staff I hired at UCF is a group of men that are unbelievable coaches and have unbelievable character. And if it wasn’t that way, we wouldn’t have been able to make the turnaround that we made."

Central Florida was winless two years ago before Frost's arrival, but went 12-0 this season and will play Auburn in the Peach Bowl on New Year's Day.
