Akron vs. Nebraska, college football, 9.1.18

Storms on Sept. 1 led to the cancellation of Nebraska's football game against Akron, and the rain just kept coming. Daily records were set on Sept. 2 and 4.

Fans waited out a lightning delay from the Memorial Stadium concourse Saturday night.

Nebraska's season opener with Akron was delayed seconds after the opening kickoff. Fox originally announced the game would be resumed Sunday at 10:30 a.m., but that turned out to be erroneous. The game was canceled.

By the time the postponement was announced, many fans had left the stadium.

"I just didn't think it was going to happen," said Al Chambers, who was home before the announcement was made. "They cleared the stadium and I kind of knew."

To ease some of the crowding in the concourse area, university officials opened up some of the buildings surrounding the stadium, including the indoor practice area, Tracey Domgard said.

Domgard and her family were watching from Memorial Stadium's club level as the rain poured and the lightning lit the sky.

"The rain was coming down sideways for a while," she said. "The wind was blowing and then it just kept coming straight down."
