Abdullah will lead Husker trio to B1G media days

Nebraska is bringing a trio of seniors to this year's Big Ten Football Media Days, and Ameer Abdullah has a speech to give.

The senior running back, along with wide receiver Kenny Bell and safety Corey Cooper, will accompany Bo Pelini to the July 28-29 event in Chicago. Abdullah has a starring role, chosen to give the keynote address on behalf of all the Big Ten players at the event's luncheon.

That role has been a much publicized one at recent Big Ten media events, with Michigan State's Kirk Cousins and Michigan's Denard Robinson among past speakers who received plenty of fanfare for what they said.

While junior defensive end Randy Gregory could have been another option for the Husker contingent, it's been pretty common for Pelini to bring seniors. Exceptions were Jared Crick and Rex Burkhead, who attended media day events while juniors.

Thursday, Gregory was named to yet another watch list — the Bronco Nagurski Award, which goes to the nation's best defensive player. Gregory is one of 10 Big Ten defenders — including fellow defensive ends Joey Bosa (Ohio State), Shilique Calhoun (Michigan State) and Frank Clark (Michigan) — on the watch list.

Cooper hasn't been heard from in a while, having sat out spring practice while recovering from a turf toe injury. Last we heard from him was after the bowl game, when he said: “I’m ready for that leadership role. I really don’t have a choice. I’m going to lead, step up and do what I have to do.”
