Jake Opitz played for Nebraska from 2005-08 and was an All-Big 12 second baseman.

The Philadelphia Phillies have purchased the contract of former Husker infielder Jake Opitz, who has been playing for the Amarillo Sox of the American Association.

Opitz, who played for NU from 2005-08 and was an All-Big 12 second baseman, hit .303 for the Sox this season. The Littleton, Colo., native had 40 RBIs, seven home runs and had a 15-game hitting streak.

The Phillies reportedly will send Opitz to Double-A Reading.

Opitz was drafted out of high school by the Mariners in the 39th round and by the Cubs in the 12th round after his NU career. He spent four years in the Chicago organization.
