Lincoln East vs. Lincoln Southwest, 10/18

Lincoln Southwest's Corinne Boyd (5) and Paige Silverberg (right) celebrate a point with teammates against Lincoln East on Oct. 18 at Lincoln East. The Silverhawks won 3-1.

Class A (Record) | Pvs.

1. Lincoln Pius X (32-2) | 1

2. Millard North (33-2) | 2

3. Millard West (19-9) | 3

4. Papillion-La Vista (23-13) | 6

5. Millard South (23-13) | 5

6. Omaha Marian (24-11) | 4

7. Gretna (20-7) | 8

8. Kearney (21-13) | 7

9. Papillion-LV South (17-16) | 9

10. Lincoln Southwest (18-15) | -

Contenders: Lincoln Southeast, Bellevue West, Lincoln East.

Comments: Lincoln Pius X and Millard North won their respective conference tournaments, so they remain atop the ratings. The Thunderbolts rolled through the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament without dropping a set. The Mustangs were pushed in the Metro, especially in the five-set championship match against Millard South, which maintains its highest ranking this season. Lincoln Southwest climbs back into the top 10 by beating rival Lincoln Southeast in the third-place match of the HAC.

Districts to watch: A-4 (Millard West, Lincoln Southwest), A-6 (Papillion-La Vista, Kearney).

Class B (Record) | Pvs.

1. Elkhorn South (26-8) | 1

2. Omaha Duchesne (24-6) | 4

3. Omaha Skutt (25-6) | 2

4. Waverly (23-7) | 5

5. Norris (22-10) | 3

6. Alliance (26-5) | 7

7. Sidney (25-7) | 6

8. Seward (27-6) | 8

9. Hastings (24-5) | 9

10. Elkhorn (20-14) | 10

Contenders: Northwest, Beatrice, Bennington, Platteview.

Comments: Omaha Duchesne and Omaha Skutt continue to jockey around the top of the ratings, but it’s the Cardinals who get the nod this week after a two-set sweep of the SkyHawks in the River Cities Conference Tournament final. With subdistricts upon us, Elkhorn South will finally turn in its grueling Class A schedule for opponents in its own class so it will be interesting to see how the Storm weathers the competition, especially with a brutal subdistrict schedule on Tuesday.

Subdistricts to watch: B-2 (Skutt, Elkhorn, Elkhorn South), B-4 (Norris, Seward), B-8 (Alliance, Sidney).

Class C-1 (Record) | Pvs.

1. Wahoo (29-2) | 1

2. Lincoln Lutheran (29-3) | 3

3. Grand Island CC (27-4) | 4

4. Bishop Neumann (27-2) | 2

5. St. Paul (30-1) | 5

6. Syracuse (23-3) | 6

7. Columbus Scotus (16-9) | 9

8. Malcolm (21-7) | 8

9. Minden (21-10) | 10

10. Auburn (21-9) | -

Contenders: Mitchell, DC West, Wayne, Chadron.

Comments: A loss to a rated Class B opponent will rarely drop a team in Class C-1 but with Wahoo, Lincoln Lutheran and GICC all boasting wins against B competition, Bishop Neumann’s loss to Elkhorn is costly at this point in the season. Syracuse maintains its spot at six despite a loss to Wahoo. Lutheran bounced back after last week’s loss to Wahoo with road wins over Norris and Beatrice. A reminder that Lutheran and Wahoo have split two matches this season with both teams sweeping the other so the line between first and second in the ratings is razor thin.

Subdistricts to watch: C1-1 (Syracuse, Auburn), C1-2 (Lincoln Lutheran, Lincoln Christian, Malcolm), C1-4 (Wahoo, Bishop Neumann).

Class C-2 (Record) | Pvs.

1. Stanton (26-1) | 1

2. Superior (26-2) | 2

3. Blue Hill (26-2) | 3

4. Hartington CC (25-4) | 4

5. Clarkson/Leigh (23-7) | 6

6. Thayer Central (24-5) | 9

7. Doniphan-Trumbull (21-7) | 8

8. Hastings St. Cecilia (20-9) | 7

9. Freeman (18-11) | -

10. Battle Creek (21-9) | 5

Contenders: Palmyra, South Loup, Fillmore Central, Elm Creek.

Comments: Class C-2 can be a bit monotonous to rate because the top four just simply refuse to lose. Stanton hasn’t lost against C-2 competition. In similar fashion, Superior hasn’t lost in more than a month and the Wildcats’ schedule down to the stretch was brutal. Hartington Cedar Catholic is the only team in the top four to lose in October, but the Trojans bounced back with a Mid State Conference Tournament title this week. Battle Creek falls almost out of the ratings after two losses in the final week of the regular season, that’s how competitive this class is heading into subdistricts.

Subdistricts to watch: C2-3 (Superior, Thayer Central, Fillmore Central), C2-6 (Stanton, Battle Creek, Clarkson/Leigh), C2-10 (Blue Hill, Doniphan-Trumbull, Hastings St. Cecilia).

Class D-1 (Record) | Pvs.

1. Archbishop Bergan (27-4) | 1

2. Pleasanton (28-2) | 2

3. Johnson-Brock (26-2) | 3

4. Humphrey/LHF (23-4) | 7

5. North Platte SP (21-8) | 6

6. Diller-Odell (24-6) | 8

7. Nebraska Christian (24-3) | 4

8. Cambridge (22-5) | 5

9. Central Valley (23-5) | 10

10. Giltner (21-7) | 9

Contenders: Hartington-Newcastle, Heartland, Dundy County-Stratton, Brady.

Comments: Nebraska Christian and Cambridge were 1-1 last week and fall three spots, while Humphrey/LHF climbs back into the top four. The class still has a staggering amount of teams above .500. Many teams that haven’t seen top-tier competition will have their rating put on the line ahead of what should be competitive state tournament.

Subdistricts to watch: D1-2 (Johnson-Brock, Diller-Odell), D1-5 (Humphrey/LHF, Nebraska Christian).

Class D-2 (Record) | Pvs.

1. BDS (24-4) | 1

2. Ewing (26-1) | 2

3. Mullen (24-3) | 3

4. Exeter-Milligan (21-7) | 4

5. Wynot (18-4) | 5

6. Cody-Kilgore (22-5) | 6

7. CWC (22-6) | 8

8. Humphrey St. Francis (15-11) | 10

9. Mead (14-10) | -

10. Falls City SH (19-11) | 9

Contenders: Bertrand, Crawford, Kenesaw, Hampton, Hyannis.

Comments: Kenesaw went 0-2 and fell out of the ratings while Mead returns for the first time in a few weeks. BDS and Ewing have been the most impressive teams in the class this season but a number of teams are ready to threaten D-2’s top teams now that the records are wiped clean. Exeter-Milligan will likely get another crack at BDS this week and the defending champs will be looking for redemption after dropping a pair of earlier meetings against the Timberwolves.

Subdistricts to watch: D2-1 (Falls City SH, Mead), D2-2 (BDS, Exeter-Milligan), D2-5 (Ewing, CWC).
