By the time the Class A No. 2 Lincoln Pius X and No. 7 Lincoln Southwest finally met in pool play at the LPS Classic on Friday, both teams had already clinched berths in Saturday’s Gold winners’ bracket. But when it comes to city matches there’s always a storyline beyond the storyline.
“We came into the match looking for revenge from a loss at Pius earlier this season,” Southwest coach Mark Novotny said.
The Silver Hawks looked poised for that revenge after a 25-22 first-set victory, but it call came down to the second set. The teams were tied at 22, 23 and 24 before Pius X eventually took the set 26-24. The momentum carried over through the third set and the Thunderbolts rolled 25-15 to move to 3-0 on the day and claim Pool B’s top spot.
“It’s always fun to be competitive with Southwest because Coach Novotny and I are great friends and I have mad respect for what he’s done with his program,” Pius X coach Katie Wenz said. “We know it’s always going to be competitive between these two teams and we never know which team is going to win when we step on the court.”
Both teams entered the match 2-0 after earning wins over Elkhorn and Lincoln North Star. The Silver Hawks entered the match coming off a complete performance against the Navigators in a 25-15, 25-7 win. The momentum carried into the match against Pius X, with the two teams nearly even over the first two sets before the Thunderbolts’ ended up deciding the match.
“We knew that if it went to three we would be tired,” Novotny said. “That’s kind of what was going through my head during the second set. We know what we have to do (Saturday), though. A couple years ago we made it through to the championship as a two seed, and that’s what we want to do again.”
The teams are joined by No. 6 Lincoln Southeast in the Gold bracket following a 3-0 day by the Knights. They picked up wins against Norris, North Platte and Lincoln East to win Pool C handily. Norris finished second in the pool and advances as well.
Some top-tier matches are now set for Saturday. The Knights will face No. 4 Omaha Marian while Pius X plays No. 5 Papillion-La Vista South. Southwest takes on Class B No. 1 Elkhorn South. Norris and No. 3 Papillion-La Vista round out the Gold bracket.
