Classes C-1 and C-2 will use a substate format to determine the state volleyball tournament field beginning this fall.
The Nebraska School Activities Association Board of Directors gave its approval at its May meeting Thursday, affirming member school voting on the class caucus proposals.
More than 66 percent of the C-1 and C-2 schools approved the plan to take the 12 subdistrict winners and the top four non-subdistrict winners in the wild-card standings, pair them up based on wild-card points and play those substate matches at neutral sites. The eight winners would then advance to state.
A similar proposal for classes D-1 and D-2 failed when just under 60 percent of those schools voted to adopt it.
Class B has used substate the past three years to decide the eight teams going to state volleyball. Eight district winners and the next eight nondistrict champions in the wild-card standings are seeded, with the highest seeded team hosting.
