Class A volleyball, Millard North vs. Pius X, 11/10/18

Millard North players celebrate in a pile after defeating Lincoln Pius X in straight sets during the Class A state volleyball championship Saturday at the Devaney Sports Center.

Class A (Record) | Pvs.

1. Millard North (38-2) | 2

2. Lincoln Pius X (36-3) | 1

3. Omaha Marian (27-12) | 6

4. Papillion-La Vista (25-14) | 4

5. Gretna (23-8) | 7

6. Millard West (22-10) | 3

7. Millard South (25-14) | 5

8. Papillion-La Vista South (18-18) | 9

9. Kearney (22-14) | 8

10. Lincoln Southeast (20-14) | -

Comments: The Millard North Mustangs put together one of the most impressive runs of the state tournament to conclude a competitive Class A season. Pius X was one of the best teams Lincoln has produced in years, and the Thunderbolts enjoyed the top rating for most of the season before eventually losing to the Mustangs in the title match. Marian is the biggest mover in the final ratings as the Crusaders nearly knocked off Pius X to once again make the title game, but the Thunderbolts outlasted them in five.

Class B (Record) | Pvs.

1. Omaha Skutt (30-7) | 3

2. Elkhorn South (31-9) | 1

3. Omaha Duchesne (31-7) | 2

4. Waverly (27-8) | 4

5. Alliance (29-6) | 6

6. Norris (24-12) | 5

7. Elkhorn (21-16) | 10

8. Sidney (26-9) | 7

9. Northwest (21-15) | -

10. Hastings (25-7) |

Comments: It seems a loss in the final of the River Cities Conference tournament just motivated Omaha Skutt as the SkyHawks slammed through the Class B bracket at the state tournament to claim their fourth straight title and reclaim the top rating. The long awaited match between Elkhorn South and Skutt, which happened in the championship match, was all SkyHawks after they dropped Duchesne in the semifinals. Waverly maintains its spot in the top four following a trip to the semifinals this season after an impressive year.

Class C-1 (Record) | Pvs.

1. Wahoo (35-2) | 1

2. Lincoln Lutheran (32-3) | 2

3. St. Paul (35-2) | 5

4. Bishop Neumann (30-5) | 4

5. Syracuse (26-4) | 6

6. GICC (30-5) | 3

7. Scotus (19-10) | 7

8. Wayne (25-10) | -

9. Malcolm (22-9) | 8

10. Broken Bow (23-8) | -

Comments: The third match between Wahoo and Lincoln Lutheran lived up to all the hype but one team had to win. Wahoo took its second title in as many seasons and maintained the No. 1 rating that the team held heading into the 2018 season. The St. Paul Wildcats put together a strong showing at the state tournament and finished third to climb back up the ratings. Wayne takes its highest rating of the season after qualifying for the state tournament.

Class C-2 (Record) | Pvs.

1. Blue Hill (32-2) | 3

2. Hartington CC (30-5) | 4

3. Stanton (31-2) | 1

4. Superior (30-4) | 2

5. Thayer Central (26-7) | 6

6. Hastings St. Cecilia (22-11) | 8

7. Freeman (18-12) | 9

8. Battle Creek (22-11) | 10

9. Clarkson/Leigh (24-8) | 5

10. Doniphan-Trumbull (21-9) | 7

Comments: Superior and Stanton finally met this season, but it was in the third place match. Blue Hill and Hartington CC advanced to the state title match past the perennial favorites and it was the Bobcats, who were playing their first season in Class C-2 after the move up from D-1 who won. It’s the Bobcats' highest rating of the year after a whirlwind season. The Superior Wildcats fall to their lowest rating of the season after back-to-back losses to close out the season.

Class D-1 (Record) | Pvs.

1. Archbishop Bergan (33-4) | 1

2. Humphrey/LHF (29-5) | 4

3. Johnson-Brock (31-4) | 3

4. Pleasanton (32-4) | 2

5. Diller-Odell (26-8) | 6

6. Cambridge (26-5) | 8

7. Nebraska Christian (26-5) | 7

8. North Platte SP (24-9) | 5

9. Lutheran High NE (22-12) | -

10. Central Valley (24-7) | 9

Comments: For the first time in four seasons there’s a new champion in Class D-1. Archbishop Bergan finished the 2018 season without dropping a match to D-1 competition and the Knights' only losses this season game to C-1 opponents that made the state tournament. Humphrey/LHF knocked off the three-time defending champion Johnson-Brock Eagles so the Bulldogs finish in the season in the top two.

Class D-2 (Record) | Pvs.

1. BDS (30-4) | 1

2. Ewing (31-3) | 2

3. Mullen (29-4) | 3

4. Wynot (24-6) | 5

5. Exeter-Milligan (23-9) | 4

6. Falls City SH (22-12) | 10

7. Cody-Kilgore (25-6) | 6

8. CWC (25-8) | 7

9. Humphrey St. Francis (17-12) | 8

10. Mead (15-12) | 9

Comments: BDS and Ewing have been battling it out at the top of the ratings all season and the teams finally met in the Class D-2 state championship match. The Eagles won a five-set thriller to take home the title and claim the No. 1 rating for good. Mullen beat Wynot in the third place match to take third at this year’s tournament. Wynot knocked off defending champion Exeter-Milligan before falling in the semifinals to conclude a strong “under the radar” season.
