North Star vs. Southeast, prep volleyball, 9/13

Lincoln Southeast's Alaetra Long (12) hits the ball past Lincoln North Star's Alexa Mustard (3) in the first set on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016, at Lincoln Southeast High School.

(Records through Saturday)

Class A (record) | Pvs.

1. Omaha Marian (16-1) | 1

2. Papillion-La Vista (18-2) | 2

3. Papillion-LVS (15-6) | 3

4. Millard West (12-7) | 5

5. Millard North (15-6) | 4

6. Lincoln Southwest (9-7) | 7

7. Lincoln Southeast (10-7) | 8

8. Grand Island (10-9) | 6

9. Lincoln North Star (8-10) | 10

10. Lincoln Pius X (12-8) | –

Contender: Millard South.

Comments: Papillion-La Vista had to fight off two match points in the semifinals against Papillion-La Vista South to win the Allison Weston Invitational. Millard West is rewarded for its win against Millard North in the other semifinal. Papillion-La Vista South bounced back to win the third-place match, avenging a pool-play loss to Millard North. North Star’s win at Grand Island, and Pius X winning its invitational shake up the bottom of the top 10. Thursday, Southwest is at Millard West and Papillion-La Vista hosts Papio South in key matches. Omaha Marian, Papio South, Southeast, Pius X, Millard South and Class B No. 6 Elkhorn South are among the teams at the Lincoln Northeast Invitational this weekend.

Class B

1. Omaha Skutt (15-0) | 1

2. Gretna (14-0) | 2

3. Northwest (14-1) | 3

4. Aurora (13-6) | 6

5. Omaha Duchesne (12-5) | 7

6. Elkhorn South (12-6) | 4

7. Elkhorn (12-4) | 5

8. Waverly (11-6) | 8

9. Norris (8-6) | 10

10. Bennington (9-8) | 9

Contenders: Omaha Gross, Beatrice, Platteview, Ralston, Omaha Roncalli, Seward.

Comments: Elkhorn South’s losses to Omaha Duchesne and Norris at the Pius X Invitational drop the Storm two spots. Elkhorn, which was sixth at the Pius X tournament, slides too, since the Antlers lost to Elkhorn South in pool play. Omaha Skutt and Gretna could meet this weekend in the Skutt Invitational, which includes Waverly, Norris and Bennington. Northwest is at the Twin Cities Invitational in Scottsbluff and Gering this weekend, where it could meet Class C-1 No. 3 Ogallala and Class C-1 No. 4 Chadron.

Class C-1

1. Kearney Catholic (17-2) | 2

2. St. Paul (17-1) | 1

3. Ogallala (14-2) | 3

4. Chadron (10-2) | 4

5. Grand Island CC (12-2) | 10

6. Bishop Neumann (11-1) | 5

7. Lincoln Christian (10-1) | 6

8. Malcolm (16-0) | 7

9. Ord (13-2) | 9

10. Omaha Concordia (12-3) | 8

Contenders: Wahoo, Fort Calhoun, Arlington, Chase County, Columbus Scotus, North Bend Central, Broken Bow, Columbus Lakeview, Minden, Wayne, Pierce, Mitchell.

Comments: GICC vaults five spots after wins against Concordia and then-No. 1 St. Paul in the Holdrege Invitational title match. Kearney Catholic regained its footing after a loss to Pius X in the Pius X Invitational with wins against Class B No. 5 Omaha Duchesne and Class B No. 7 Elkhorn. While Malcolm is the only undefeated team left in Class C-1, the Clippers are also the only team in the rankings without a win against another rated opponent. Ratings contender North Bend Central (15-1) is at Malcolm in a key match Thursday. Where Malcolm should be rated may not be clear until its Oct. 20 match at Bishop Neumann.

Class C-2

1. Diller-Odell (16-0) | 1

2. Stanton (15-2) | 2

3. Crofton (10-2) | 3

4. Howells-Dodge (10-1) | 4

5. Ponca (14-1) | 5

6. Twin River (13-5) | 6

7. Hartington CC (13-5) | 8

8. Doniphan-Trumbull (15-1) | 9

9. Hastings SC (9-7) | 10

10. Wisner-Pilger (8-6) | –

Contenders: Battle Creek, Freeman, Palmyra, Southern Valley, Cambridge, Archbishop Bergan, Hemingford.

Comments: Wisner-Pilger’s win against Battle Creek explains the only change this week. Battle Creek has a chance to get back in the top 10 with matches against Hartington Cedar Catholic (Tuesday) and Class D-1 No. 1 Elgin/Pope John (triangular at Boone Central on Thursday).

Class D-1

1. Elgin/Pope John (13-0) | 1

2. Johnson-Brock (13-2) | 2

3. Meridian (7-3) | 5

4. Lutheran Northeast (10-7) | 3

5. Guardian Angels CC (8-4) | 4

6. Heartland (8-4) | 6

7. Dundy Co.-Stratton (9-3) | 7

8. Cedar Bluffs (8-3) | 8

9. Alma (11-3) | 9

10. BDS (7-6) | 10

Contenders: Ansley-Litchfield, Bertrand, South Loup, Friend, Blue Hill, Overton.

Comments: Meridian moves up two spots after Lutheran Northeast’s loss to Pierce and GACC’s lopsided setback to Arlington. Bertrand (11-5) has won seven straight since a 4-5 start.

Class D-2

1. Hampton (17-0) | 1

2. Exeter-Milligan (10-3) | 2

3. St. Mary’s (10-1) | 3

4. Axtell (10-1) | 5

5. Brady (11-2) | 6

6. Wynot (5-1) | 8

7. Red Cloud (9-3) | 7

8. CWC (9-5) | 10

9. Spalding Academy (8-2) | –

10. Falls City SH (11-6) | 9

Contenders: Potter-Dix, Sandhills/Thedford, Stuart, Wallace, Winside, Humphrey St. Francis, Anselmo-Merna, Riverside, Dorchester.

Comments: Stuart exits after a loss to Spalding Academy. Wynot moves past Red Cloud after Red Cloud’s loss to Class D-1 unranked Blue Hill. Sacred Heart drops a spot for a loss to Class D-1 unranked Lourdes Central Catholic. The Stuart vs. St. Mary's matchup in a triangular Monday is not accounted for in the ratings.
