Creighton Prep vs. Millard South

Creighton Prep's Eric Allbery jumps on the dogpile as the Junior Jays celebrate their win over Millard South in the Class A state baseball championship at Werner Park in 2018.

Class A (Record) | 2018*

* final rank

1. Creighton Prep (2-1) | 1

2. Millard West (0-0) | 5

3. Millard South (0-0) | 2

4. Elkhorn South (0-0) | 8

5. Papillion-La Vista (0-0) | -

6. Lincoln Southwest (1-0) | 4

7. Omaha Burke (0-0) | 3

8. Omaha Westside (1-1) | 9

9. Lincoln Southeast (0-0) | 7

10. Millard North (2-0) | -

Contenders: Grand Island, Lincoln East.

Comments: Millard West is absolutely loaded this season, but Creighton Prep claims the top spot heading into the season because it’s hard to deny three straight championships. Prep is truly a testament to the “reload rather than rebuild” strategy, and while they lost a lot of talent last season to graduation, the Junior Jays still have some of the best talent in the state. Papio makes the biggest move up the ranks from last season with several players headed to the next level once their high school careers are over. Southwest enters as Lincoln’s top team, but Southeast is right on the Silver Hawks' heels.

Class B (Record) | 2018

1. Omaha Skutt (0-0) | 5

2. Elkhorn (0-0) | 4

3. Waverly (1-1) | 7

4. Norris (0-0) | 2

5. Omaha Roncalli (0-0) | 1

6. Bennington (0-0) | -

7. Lincoln Pius X (0-0) | -

8. Hastings (0-0) | 3

9. Platteview (0-0) | 10

10. Wahoo/LL/BN (1-0) | 6

Contenders: Omaha Concordia, Blair, Wayne, Seward.

Comments: Omaha Skutt and Elkhorn enter the season in a neck-and-neck race for the top spot, but the SkyHawks get the nod for the number of upperclassmen they return. Skutt brings back a number of pitchers with experience, and the SkyHawk rotation will cause problems for opponents until the weather begins to warm up. Defending champion Roncalli only returns four starters this season and enter the rankings at No. 5. But with senior Alex Rodgers on the diamond, the Pride will surely be in the mix.
