Elkhorn vs. Norris, 4.1

Elkhorn's Trenthon Smith (1) is met at the plate by pitcher Kyler Beekman (10) after scoring against Norris Monday at Hickman City Park.

Records through Saturday

Class A (Rec.) | Pvs.

1. Millard West (12-0) | 1

2. Lincoln Southwest (7-1) | 3

3. Omaha Burke (8-1) | 6

4. Creighton Prep (9-4) | 2

5. Elkhorn South (6-3) | 8

6. Grand Island (6-3) | -

7. Omaha Westside (6-3) |5

8. Millard South (6-5) | 4

9. Papillion-La Vista (6-5) | 7

10. Millard North (6-6) | 10

Contenders: Lincoln Southeast, Lincoln East, Gretna.

Comments: Millard West rallied to beat Southwest in the championship of the Frank Ryan Invitational and, in doing so, became Class A’s only remaining undefeated team. The top three teams have separated themselves from the rest of the pack as the bottom six teams in the rankings have taken turns beating each other. Prep’s five-game win streak was upended with a loss to Papio and then to Oak Park (Missouri) while Elkhorn South dropped three straight to end March but responded with four straight to begin April. With conference tournaments taking place this week, more shakeups in the top 10 are sure to follow.

Key games this week: Tuesday--Millard North at Millard West; Thursday-Saturday--Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament, Metro Conference Tournament.

Class B

1. Omaha Roncalli (4-1) | 3

2. Elkhorn (5-4) | 2

3. Hastings (7-1) | 6

4. Waverly (6-3) | 1

5. Wahoo/BN/LL (5-2) | 7

6. Norris (4-3) | 5

7. Bennington (7-2) | 9

8. Mount Michael (6-0) | -

9. Omaha Skutt (3-6) | 8

10. Beatrice (4-3) | -

Contenders: Seward, Lincoln Pius X, Nebraska City, Ralston.

Comments: After an opening-game loss, the Crimson Pride have rattled off four straight wins over two rated opponents, including rival Omaha Skutt and two Class A teams. Elkhorn has played a brutal Class A schedule to this point and the Antlers have several of the most impressive wins in Class B this season despite the four losses. Hastings continues to roll early in the season, much like they did last season, while Waverly is hanging around the top half of the rankings as the Eastern Midlands Conference Tournament looms this week. The EMC Tournament, which began Monday, will have a big impact on the Class B rankings with four of the eight teams currently in the top 10.

Key games this week: Thursday--Mount Michael at Omaha Skutt; Friday--Beatrice at Omaha Skutt; Nebraska Capitol Conference Tournament.
