Norris vs. Waverly, 4.10

Waverly's Ben Carter (12) slides into third base against Norris last month at Lawson Park.

Records through Saturday

Class A (Rec.) | Pvs.

1. Millard West (14-0) | 1

2. Creighton Prep (10-4) | 4

3. Lincoln Southwest (10-3) | 2

4. Elkhorn South (8-3) | 5

5. Millard South (10-5) | 8

6. Omaha Westside (7-3) | 7

7. Omaha Burke (9-3) | 3

8. Lincoln East (9-5) | -

9. Kearney (9-4) | -

10. Gretna (8-4) | -

Contenders: Grand Island, Lincoln Southeast, Archbishop Bergan, Millard North, Papillion-La Vista.

Comments: Quite a shakeup as three teams climb into the top 10 after a busy week. Lincoln East jumps into the rankings for the first time this season after winning the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament championship. Kearney, a first-year program, also put in a solid performance at the HAC Tournament. The Metro Tournament, which would’ve been a nice midseason barometer, was canceled, so several teams were denied the chance to make some noise. Millard West remains the state’s only undefeated team.

Key games this week: Tuesday—Omaha Burke at Creighton Prep, Wednesday—Lincoln Southwest at Lincoln East; Thursday—Kearney at Creighton Prep; Friday-Saturday—Monarch Invite (Millard West, Southeast, Papillion-La Vista), Spartan Invitational (Lincoln Southwest, Lincoln East, Millard South, Omaha Burke).

Class B

1. Waverly (10-3) | 4

2. Omaha Roncalli (6-1) | 1

3. Bennington (8-3) | 7

4. Elkhorn (5-5) | 2

5. Hastings (9-3) | 3

6. Norris (6-4) | 6

7. Wahoo/BN/LL (7-3) | 5

8. Omaha Skutt (7-7) | 9

9. Seward (8-3) | -

10. Concordia/BT/OC (7-4) | -

Contenders: Mount Michael, Nebraska City, Beatrice, Crete.

Comments: An impressive run to the Eastern Midlands Conference championship has Waverly back on top in Class B, but Roncalli remains on the Vikings' heels after six straight wins. The Crimson Pride haven’t lost since mid-March and when they can get games in, which has been a bit of a struggle, they’re one of the most impressive teams in the state. Counting Gretna in Class A, the EMC has five of its eight teams in the rankings and three of the top four teams in Class B. Wahoo/BN/LL will be put to the test this week with three games against ranked opponents over the next seven days. A good run could result in the Warriors' highest ranking of the season.

Key games this week: Thursday—Hastings at Waverly, Norris at Seward, Gretna at Wahoo/BN/LL; Saturday—Waverly at Wahoo/BN/LL, Spartan Invitational (Norris).
