South Sioux City vs. Waverly, 12.28.18

Waverly's Sydni Schernikau (5) shoots a three pointer over South Sioux City's Jalen Galvin (22) during a Waverly Holiday Tournament game at Waverly High School on Friday.

Records through Saturday

CLASS A

Team (Rec.) | Pvs

1. Papillion-La Vista (11-1) | 4

2. Millard South (10-1) | 1

3. Omaha Westside (9-3) | 5

4. Millard West (6-4) | 8

5. Fremont (9-2) | -

6. Lincoln Pius X (7-3) | 7

7. Millard North (7-3) | 2

8. Omaha Northwest (6-6) | 3

9. Lincoln Southwest (10-2) | 9

10. Omaha Benson (8-2) | -

Contenders: Lincoln East, Lincoln High, Lincoln Northeast, Kearney.

Comments: Papio's run to the Metro Tournament title included avenging its lone loss to Omaha Northwest, a semifinal win against then-No. 1 Millard South and a finals win against defending state champion Westside. Fremont makes the biggest move after a strong showing in the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, followed by wins against Lincoln High and Pius X in the HAC Tournament. Judging by play in the Metro and HAC tournaments, it doesn't appear much separates Nos. 1-10, which should make for an interesting January.

Key games: Friday--Lincoln Southwest at Fremont, Lincoln High at Lincoln Pius X; Saturday--Millard South at Millard North, Lincoln Southwest at Elkhorn South, Lincoln Northeast at Papillion-La Vista.

CLASS B

Team (Rec.) | Pvs

1. Waverly (9-0) | 2

2. Seward (8-2) | 3

3. Northwest (9-3) | 6

4. Omaha Skutt (8-4) | 5

5. Norris (5-5) | 7

6. South Sioux City (8-5) | 1

7. Crete (7-4) | 8

8. Elkhorn South (4-7) | 9

9. Elkhorn (7-3) | 4

10. Sidney (11-2) | 10

Contenders: Hastings, North Platte, Platteview, York.

Comments: A stretch that included two wins against Norris and another against South Sioux City has Waverly at the top, and no other team has matched Waverly in terms of consistency. That in mind, you might have a better shot at predicting a two-week weather forecast than predicting how Class B is going to play out. Outside of Waverly, several rated teams have hit bumps, but they also have strong wins. For example, Northwest lost to Columbus Lakeview on Friday, but owns wins against Skutt, Norris and Crete. South Sioux City has been missing two starters.

Key games: Tuesday--Waverly at Beatrice, Northwest at Hastings SC; Friday--York at Crete, Elkhorn South at Millard South; Saturday--Waverly at Seward, Crete at Norris, Lincoln Southwest at Elkhorn South, Omaha Skutt at Louisville.

CLASS C-1

Team (Rec.) | Pvs.

1. Wahoo (11-0) | 1

2. Bishop Neumann (9-2) | 3

3. Grand Island CC (10-1) | 5

4. Louisville (11-1) | 7

5. Mitchell (11-1) | 2

6. Lincoln Christian (7-4) | 6

7. West Point-Beemer (10-1) | 4

8. Columbus Lakeview (9-2) | -

9. Aquinas (8-2) | -

10. Milford (10-3) | -

Contenders: Adams Central, Auburn, Columbus Scotus, Kearney Catholic, Malcolm, Ogallala, Syracuse.

Comments: Wahoo remains the only unbeaten team in C-1 and has picked up wins against two of Class B's top teams in Seward and Crete along the way. Mitchell and West Point-Beemer fell from the unbeaten ranks after losses to Superior and BRLD, respectively. Louisville -- the lone loss to Wahoo -- takes advantage and moves up. Columbus Lakeview enters after an impressive win against Class B Northwest. Milford checks in at 10th after a road win at then-rated Malcolm.

Key games: Tuesday--Guardian Angels CC at Bishop Neumann, Milford at Syracuse; Thursday--Louisville at Lincoln Christian; Friday--Wahoo at Platteview, Grand Island CC at Aquinas, Columbus Scotus at Lincoln Christian; Saturday--Aquinas at Columbus Lakeview; Louisville at Omaha Skutt.

CLASS C-2

Team (Rec.) | Pvs.

1. Hastings SC (11-0) | 2

2. Oakland-Craig (12-0) | 3

3. Crofton (10-2) | 6

4. Fillmore Central (9-3) | 9

5. Superior (10-1) | 1

6. Ponca (9-2) | -

7. Guardian Angels CC (10-2) | 7

8. BRLD (9-3) | 5

9. Clarkson/Leigh (9-2) | 4

10. Blue Hill (7-3) | 10

Contenders: Battle Creek, Centennial, Doniphan-Trumbull, Elm Creek, Wood River, Yutan.

Comments: C-2 has shown over the past couple of weeks that it may be the deepest of the six classes. Fillmore Central provided the latest shakeup with its 53-52 win against then-No. 1 Superior on Saturday. Just as impressive was Crofton's 53-47 win against Class B power South Sioux City on Friday. Hastings St. Cecilia already owns victories against Blue Hill, Bishop Neumann, Fillmore Central, Elkhorn, Platteview and Lincoln Christian.

Key games: Tuesday--Northwest at Hastings SC, Guardian Angels CC at Bishop Neumann, Fillmore Central at Malcolm; Friday--BRLD at Oakland-Craig, Clarkson/Leigh at Humphrey SF, Wood River at Broken Bow.

CLASS D-1

Team (Rec.) | Pvs.

1. North Platte St. Pat's (12-0) | 1

2. Pleasanton (11-1) | 2

3. Humphrey/LHF (10-1) | 3

4. Archbishop Bergan (8-4) | 4

5. Dundy Co.-Stratton (11-0) | 5

6. North Central (10-0) | 6

7. Weeping Water (10-2) | 10

8. Elkhorn Valley (9-1) | 7

9. Elgin/PJ (10-2) | 8

10. Hitchcock County (8-2) | 9

Contenders: Cambridge, Central Valley, Hartington-Newcastle, Lawrence-Nelson, Overton.

Comments: After opening the season with a six-point win against C-1 Broken Bow, North Platte St. Pat's has won its next 11 games by an average of 31.7 points, and that includes six games against Class C-1 competition. Archbishop Bergan remains fourth despite four losses against teams in Classes C-1 or C-2. Three of those defeats have come against state title contenders.

CLASS D-2

Team (Rec.) | Pvs.

1. Humphrey SF (12-1) | 1

2. Falls City SH (11-1) | 3

3. Exeter-Milligan (11-1) | 2

4. BDS (9-2) | 4

5. CWC (9-3) | 5

6. Ewing (8-2) | 6

7. Mullen (9-1) | 8

8. Wynot (7-3) | 7

9. South Platte (9-0) | -

10. Kenesaw (6-2) | 9

Contenders: Hyannis, Loomis, Maywood-Hayes Center, Silver Lake, Sterling.

Comments: There were a lot games between Dec. 18 (the last release of ratings) and now, and yet, the top six remains nearly unchanged. Sacred Heart avenged its only loss by beating Lourdes Central Catholic in the Freeman tournament. Nos. 2, 3 and 4 are in this week's MUDECAS Tournament, so we'll learn more about the top part of this class soon.

Key games: Monday-Friday--MUDECAS (Exeter-Milligan, Falls City SH, BDS, Sterling); Tuesday--Ewing at Elkhorn Valley, Mullen at North Platte SP; Thursday--Humphrey SF at Pierce, Kenesaw at Lawrence-Nelson; Friday--Humphrey SF at Clarkson/Leigh;
