Coming into the season, senior Gavyn Leitschuck was looking to do big things as Lincoln North Star’s quarterback.

But a high ankle sprain in the first quarter of the first game and the emergence of sophomore DJ McGarvie behind center now has Leitschuck making significant contributions as the Navigators’ slotback.

Leitschuck accounted for 104 yards of total offense and scored a pair of touchdowns in helping the Gators claim a 52-16 victory over Omaha Bryan on Friday at Seacrest Field.

The 190-pound senior scored on a 34-yard jet sweep from McGarvie on North Star’s second play of the game, then added a 10-yard TD run midway through the second quarter to give the Gators (3-5) a 28-0 margin.

“I wish I would’ve known more about Gavyn’s athleticism before the season, so we could’ve utilized him better earlier than Week 8,” said first-year North Star coach Tony Kobza, whose team led 31-0 at halftime. “He’s fully healthy now and he’s doing a nice job for us as a slot receiver and the bone back in our flex bone.”

McGarvie finished 9-of-15 for 147 yards with three touchdown passes. He connected with Denis Francis on a 27-yard middle screen for a score early in the second period and threw a 12-yard TD pass to Tariq Goode on the first possession of the third quarter to make it 38-0.

Francis also scored on a 13-yard run in the opening period and an 88-yard kickoff return with 10:03 left in the game.

“DJ got a little overexcited on a couple throws today, but as a sophomore, he continues to show he’s got a bright future,” Kobza said. “He runs and throws the ball well, and even as a young player, he makes the right read and gets the ball in the right spot most of the time.”

North Star’s defense held Bryan (1-7) to just 30 total yards in the first half and minus 7 rushing. The Navigators’ Matt Kopplin and Cole Coffey each intercepted a pass in the second quarter.

Bryan quarterback Jack Wiebelhaus bounced back to throw two TD passes in the second half — a 38-yarder to LeMondre Perkins in the third quarter and a 20-yarder to Jaylon Walker in the final period.
