Grand Island senior Cole Evans was named the Nebraska Gatorade baseball player of the year Thursday.

The Creighton recruit helped lead the Islanders to the state tournament, batting .556 with 15 doubles, 30 RBIs and 30 runs scored. His on-base percentage was .631. Evans also had nine games of three hits or more.
Evans, who was a standout football player for the Islanders, also pitched, going 3-3 with a 3.41 earned-run average.
Grand Island finished 19-11 this season. A broken finger on his right hand prevented Evans from playing in the state tournament.
