Kevin Cosgrove denied a report on vikings.scout.com that he is a leading candidate for the NFL team’s defensive coordinator position.
“There’s nothing to it,” the Nebraska third-year defensive coordinator said Friday. “I’m not a candidate for the job.”
Vikings.scout.com, citing a league source, said it is expected that Cosgrove would be offered the position.
“That’s all speculation,” Cosgrove said.
Former Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin left Jan. 18 to become head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cosgrove has remained prominent in speculation in Twin Cities media, the theory being the Vikings could be waiting until after national signing day Wednesday to make a formal offer.
Vikings head coach Brad Childress tried to hire Cosgrove last year to coach the team’s linebackers. The two coached together at Wisconsin in the 1990s and at Illinois in the 1980s.
