Browns running back Kareem Hunt has stayed out of team drills during practice the past two days in protest because he’s asking for a long-term contract extension from the team. Hunt is the final year of a two-year, $12 million deal he signed two years ago. The 27-year-old has been productive during his three seasons for Cleveland. But he missed nine games last season with calf and ankle injuries. Hunt’s situation adds more drama for the Browns, who are waiting to see how quarterback long Deshaun Watson will be suspended for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
Zach Wilson took the field at MetLife Stadium for the first time since last season and put together another solid practice. That’s promising news for the New York Jets and their second-year quarterback. Wilson was unofficially 12 of 19 including four drops by receivers for 100 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the scrimmage. The practice was a leadup to the Jets’ first preseason game next Friday night at Philadelphia. New York also hosted free agent offensive tackle Duane Brown, who attended the practice.
Matthew Stafford downplayed the significance of his elbow injury after showing just how little it’s holding him back in practice with the Los Angeles Rams. Stafford participated extensively in the Rams’ latest workout at UC Irvine on Saturday, making deep throws and building chemistry with his teammates in what was likely his most extensive work of training camp. Afterward, Stafford said his right elbow condition is merely “irritating,” and not a threat to his ability to lead the Super Bowl champions’ title defense. Coach Sean McVay raised eyebrows Thursday when he said Stafford’s injury was “abnormal” for a quarterback.
The rebound the Minnesota Vikings are seeking on defense won’t amount to much without a consistent effectiveness by Dalvin Tomlinson and Harrison Phillips at the interior positions. They're run-stoppers first. They'll need to provide a pass-rushing presence, too. The current NFL demands more from interior defensive linemen than simply plugging a gap. Phillips came to Minnesota after leaving Buffalo as a free agent. Tomlinson made his Vikings debut in 2021.
