Legislature chamber

The Nebraska Legislature meets in the George W. Norris Chamber.

Prospects are dim that the Legislature this session will pass comprehensive property tax relief.

Senators apparently cannot agree on common principles for property tax relief that will completely satisfy both urban and rural angry taxpayers. Gubernatorial initiatives are stalled in committee. Relief through an initiative petition failed in 2018.

Elections can have consequences. In 2020, Nebraska property owners have an opportunity to elect from both cities and farm and ranch country candidates who pledge to write legislation that will guarantee a satisfactory answer to this question: "Senator, will your bill lower my property taxes in future years?"

Time to begin a candidate roundup and lasso fiscally conservative legislative candidates who, after being elected, will at last hear and act upon the continuous clamor for substantial property tax relief.

President, Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom
