Hazelwood fire

Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews battle a house fire in east Lincoln on Thursday, Nov. 29, in this screen capture from a video the department posted on Twitter.

As a community, Lincoln can be very proud of our top-notch first responders. While I’ve never experienced a tragedy as devastating as I did last week, when I needed them, they were right there in force.

I’d like to thank from the bottom of my heart so many who responded immediately to the fire that caused my home to be a total loss, including the fine men and women of Lincoln Fire and Rescue, the detectives, the Lincoln Police Department, the American Red Cross and Lincoln Animal Control. The investigators and insurance company are also deeply appreciated for their thorough job.

Some people simply do their job, but, at this very rough scene, I was helped by those who did their jobs with a human touch and true compassion for the immense loss my son and I have suffered. This was deeply appreciated more than mere words can express.

While I am heartbroken, my spirits are lifted as I am reminded of so many who love, care deeply and wish to help.

David Hill, Lincoln
