Lincoln native Paul Jarrett is co-founder/CEO of the Bulu Box health, nutrition and weight loss discovery box (see question three for a description of a BuluBox). Jarrett graduated from Lincoln Pius X High School and attended Iowa State and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has lived on both coasts but has found a home again in Nebraska’s capital city.
What is it like waking up in the morning with a startup to run?
Exciting and terrifying. For me, it’s kind of like getting ready for a big competition, presentation, or a game-winning play. You have to come mentally prepared every day. I played college football as a starting defensive lineman for the Iowa State Cyclones, and the feeling I get walking to work feels like when I was walking into the stadium for a big game.
What is your favorite part of Lincoln and why?
The people. The people. The people. I know it sounds super cliché, but it’s true. After living in New York City and San Francisco, I can say that those cities might have better amenities or entertainment, but at the end of the day if you don’t enjoy who you’re doing those activities with, it doesn't matter. I also love that Lincoln is entering a new frontier, and to be a “pioneer” of sorts on that front is exciting. We’re starting companies, changing rules, updating laws, adding infrastructure. Being part of a force that’s changing a city is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Describe Bulu Box to someone who hasn't heard of it
Bulu Box is the first health, nutrition and weight loss discovery box designed to help people feel their best. Each month, subscribers get a tailored Bulu Box filled with a new mix of four to five premium samples from top brands to try. If they do so, they earn discounts to purchase products in full size at BuluBox.com. We strive to provide expert tips, tricks and a supportive community of “Bulugans” to help people reach their goals. At the end of the day, we want people to discover products that physically make them feel better.
What are your life/career goals?
My first goal is always to be the best husband and father (soon to be) I can be. When it comes to career, our goal has always been to grow and sell our company. After I check off that box, I’d like to do something that can truly make a dent in the world. There are so many opportunities to make the world a better place with a little bit of technology, and that really appeals to me. Life is short, and I refuse to go out without first doing something that leaves a positive mark on the world. Perhaps my goal is to have my headstone read, “An amazing husband and father who always went BIG.”
Where do you like to go to get away?
Ugh. I feel like I should have a really mind-blowing answer for this, like I enjoy going to a little vineyard in Northern Italy that makes the most amazing wine you can’t get in the United States. The reality is, what I truly enjoy is a 3 a.m. walk through downtown Lincoln while listening to the podcast "This American Life."
What is your favorite motivational quote?
“This is where normal people quit” – something I came up with years and years ago, and it still challenges me today. Is that arrogant to quote myself? Meh. I repeat this internally to myself whenever I feel overwhelmed.
How do you take your coffee?
Double espresso with mineral water, please.
