Our September L Magazine cover features Robert Ripley, Nebraska State Capitol administrator, and former State Sen. DiAnna Schimek, chairperson of the campaign to raise $1.4 million to complete garden landscaping in the Capitol’s four courtyards.
The long-awaited installation of fountains last fall brought the courtyards a step closer to architect Bertram Goodhue’s original design. But something was still missing – the garden landscaping inside the courtyards. Schimek and several other former state senators are leading the campaign to complete it.
See Susan Larson Rodenburg’s cover story titled "Campaign seeks to raise $1.4 million to complete Capitol courtyards landscaping" on this website. We thank Zach Tuttle for contributing this month’s cover photo.

With Husker football season about to begin, check out my article titled "Huskers help raise funds for pediatric brain cancer research" and photos of the Nebraska Football Road Race on this website. Over 100 football players and other Husker athletes helped raise $30,000 for pediatric brain cancer research.
Also in this issue, see the attempt by former Journal Star staffers Ken Hambleton and John Mabry to golf all 81 holes of Lincoln’s public courses in one day. Thunderstorms foiled their effort after 63 holes, but you’ll enjoy Hambleton’s humorous account, titled "Golf Marathon: Former LJS sports staffers play 63 holes in 13 hours," on this website.
