Nebraska patrol says 5 people, including 3 children, killed in SUV-semi collision

BRIDGEPORT — Authorities say two adults and three children died when their SUV collided with a semitrailer on a Nebraska Panhandle highway.

The crash occurred a little before 6 p.m. Sunday, about 10 miles north of Bridgeport on U.S. 385, during heavy rain.

The Nebraska State Patrol says the northbound Ford Expedition went out of control, crossed the center line and hit the oncoming semi.

All five people in the SUV died at the scene. The driver was identified as Amy Rednest, 30, of Alliance, and her passengers as Vanessa Gomez, 31, and Nevaeh Montoya, 14, both of Westminster, Colorado; Emma Reza, 13, and Falicia Reza, 9, both of Alliance. 

They all were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The truck driver, Brian Schmer, 61, of Hudson, Colorado, was taken to Morrill County Community Hospital in Bridgeport. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The crash remains under investigation.
