WAHOO — Authorities say a man was killed when he was knocked from the top of a viaduct on U.S. 77.

Saunders County Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz said in a news release Friday that five northbound vehicles were involved in a pileup at about 6:20 p.m. Thursday on the viaduct on the west side of Wahoo.

The sheriff's office said 65-year-old Gene Lefler of Bennington had left his vehicle to check on another driver when a semi went out of control on the icy pavement and struck Lefler.

Lefler was taken to Saunders Medical Center in Wahoo and then to a Lincoln hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff says no other injuries were reported.
