Man arrested in alleged Fairbury kidnapping, high-speed chase

FAIRBURY — A man is in police custody Thursday morning after police say he kidnapped a Fairbury woman and led police on a high-speed chase through Jefferson County and into Kansas.

Chris Kuhlmann, 34, was taken into custody early Thursday after he lost control of the vehicle he was driving in Belleville, Kansas, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

Deputies in Jefferson County were first called to a Fairbury residence at about 4:50 a.m. Thursday on the report of an intruder.

Authorities say Kuhlmann kidnapped a woman and forced her into a vehicle outside the residence. Deputies arrived as the suspect’s vehicle pulled away.

A pursuit ensued, with speeds reaching 115 mph as Kuhlmann drove west toward Hebron and then south into Kansas, the news release said. There, the suspect lost control of his vehicle and Kuhlmann was taken into custody.

Kuhlmann, who is wanted on warrants for domestic assault, assault by mutual consent, false imprisonment and child abuse, is suspected of kidnapping, burglary, felony flight to avoid arrest and terroristic threats.
